The AI Act
Published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on 12 July 2024, with an entry into force on 1 August 2024, the European Artificial Intelligence Regulation (“AI Act”) is a landmark text introducing a comprehensive regulatory framework applicable to all stakeholders in the AI systems value chain within the European Union.
A Horizontal Regulation with Broad Geographical Scope
The AI Act it is not a vertical or sector-specific regulation; it establishes cross-cutting rules for AI. In most cases, the AI Act applies in conjunction with pre-existing regulations, particularly those closely related to it, such as personal data protection laws.
Its geographical scope is broad: it applies to all actors in the AI systems value chain that place AI systems on the market or put them into service within the EU, whether they are based in the EU or in a third country providers, as well as to providers and deployers of AI systems that have their place of establishment or are located outside the EU, where the output produced by the AI system is used in the EU.
