Les premières voitures autonomes ont fait leur apparition sur les routes du Nevada aux Etats-Unis en 2012. Cinq ans après, vingt-un Etats américains et le district de Columbia ont adopté des lois autorisant les tests des voitures autonomes, tout comme la Suède, l’Allemagne, la Belgique, la France, l’Angleterre, Singapour et le Japon.
En parallèle, au niveau du droit privé international, la convention de Vienne sur la circulation routière du 8 novembre 1968 a été modifiée par la Commission Économique des Nations Unies pour l’Europe le 23 mars 2016 pour autoriser expressément la circulation de véhicules autonomes sur les routes des pays adhérents, à condition que les systèmes autonomes « soient conformes aux règlements des Nations Unies sur les véhicules ou qu’ils puissent être contrôlés, voire désactivés par le conducteur ».
Les obstacles règlementaires sont levés les uns après les autres, mais la route vers l’exploitation commerciale des voitures sans chauffeur reste encore longue alors que les optimistes prévoient que les ventes de voitures autonomes vont atteindre 21 millions d’ici 2035.
